Located in the northwest of Hubei, china, on the middle reach of the Han River, Xiangfan is well known for merging Xiangyang and Fancheng, ancient city and ancient port respectively. With a total area of 19700 square kms and total population of 5.8 million, constructed area covering 100 square kms upon which live 120300 people, it is the second largest city in Hubei province. In 2005, Xiangfan ranks No.4 among the most factory-friendly cities listed on Forbes—the most influential commercial magazine in the U.S, based on the calculation of nearly three year’s average of three indexes, workforce (numbers of college degree holders per 10000 people), operation cost (labor price, land rent, tax, energy and etc) freight cost (railway, road, water/land, air and etc), and No.54 among the best commercial cites in China. Xiangfan is an important base of Dongfeng Automobile Company for the development of heavy diesel vehicles, light vehicles and sedans, with the largest automobile production base and the most advanced vehicle trial field across the country. The city has more than 180 auto- parts manufacturers and is the important base of auto parts production in China. With Dongfeng Nissan joint project of annual production of 10000 economical sedans being started, Xiangfan is speeding up to become an “Auto City” on Chinese inland.
Xiangfan is a “ national historical and cultural city”, “china’s excellent tourist city”, “one of china’s top 10 charming cities”. It has a history of 2800 years. Zhu Geliang, wisdom icon of Chinese people, had inhabited in Ancient Longzhong 13 kms west of Xiangyang for 10 years. Mi Fu, Meng Haoran, Zhang Ji, Shong Yu, all these literators had endowed Xiangfan with more humanism. Within the prefecture there are 36 sightseeing spots at national or provincial level, among which Ancient Longzhong is listed at national level 4A.
Xiangfan Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone profile
Xiangfan Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone was established as a state level development zone under approval of the State Council in November 1992. It is located in the north of Xiangfan, spreading to Youfanggang where sits Dongfeng Company Xiangfan Base. The zone has a controlled area of 96 square kms, total population of 123300, policy area of 7.5 square kms, planned city area of 29.41 square kms and constructed area of 17 square kms. It is the central area of Xiangfan comprehensive development plan for 1995-2010, rallying spot of China’s automobile and military industries as well as a area with the most densed technology and intelligence adjoining nearby Hubei, Henan, Sichuan and Shanxi.
Since its founding 13 years ago, Xiangfan Hi-tech Zone has been bearing the development concept of “developing high technology and realizing industrialization”, sticking to the strategy of “promoting the Zone with projects” and “strengthening the Zone with technology”, continuously renovating management and service systems, optimizing operation mechanisms, perfecting policies of “being kind to merchants, to settle merchants and enrich merchants”, continuously improving investment environment, and has introduced a batch of projects that follow the industrial policies. For now in the Zone there are 1200 registered enterprises among which 250 industrial, 73 above scale, 158 automobile and auto-parts, 163 recognized hi-tech. International brands including Comins USA. Dana USA, Peugeot Citroen French, Nissan Japan and Yulong Tanwan have settled in the Zone. Eight large or medium sized military-transferred –into -civil enterprises with technical orientation, and four listed companies, Dongfeng Automobile, Dongfeng Instrument, Hubei New Huaguang, Hubei Aviation Machinery Technology have convened here. An industrial layout of “two big parks, three big bases” has preliminarily formed, that is, hi-tech park with military machinery and electrics as the main body; whole vehicle, power, research&development and auto parts base with Dongfeng Automobile Xiangfan base as the locomotive, the country’s largest research & development and production base of special optical glass with Hubei New Huaguang Information Materials Co.Ltd. as the flagship, and the country’s largest research, design, experiment, and manufacture base of aeronautical life-saving equipments.
